KATHMANDU, APR 29 -
Cricket Association Nepal (CAN) has extended the contract of national cricket coach Pubudu Dassanayake by just three months.
Though a CAN board meeting had decided to extend Dassanayake's contract
for a year, the cricket governing body extended the contract by only
three months citing the ongoing investigation by the Commission for the
Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).
CIAA had initiated investigation into the alleged irregularities in the
CAN after the disgruntled national cricket team decided to boycott the
One-day National cricket tournament demanding the ouster of the current
cricket administrators.
National cricket team Captain Paras Khadka said that the extending the
cricket coach's contract by only three months has given rise to multiple
doubts. "Dassanayake has a big hand to bring Nepali cricket to the
present level. Contract might have been extended by three months to
remove him," Khadka said.
Under Dassanayake Nepal achieved several success, most notably the
qualification to the ICC World T20 in Bangladesh. He also played a key
role in helping Nepal graduate to ICC World Cricket League Division 4
from Division 2 and reach the 50-over World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand
for the first time. Nepal also won the ACC Trophy for the first time in
October 2011, which they shared with hosts the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, the national cricket team is flying to Malaysia today to
take part in ACC Premier League. The Premier League comprises of Nepal,
Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Oman, UAE and hosts Malaysia. It will be the
first 50-over event for Nepal after their hugely disappointing New
Zealand tour.
