KATHMANDU, FEB 12 - Various student unions have demanded that the semester system should be enforced in the masters' level in all colleges across the country.

Organising a press conference in the Capital on Wednesday, 11 student unions including the CPN-Maoist affiliated ANNISU-R, Students' Forum Nepal and ANNFSU (sixth) said a dual criterion should not be set in the education system of the same level.

The Tribhuvan University (TU) had earlier decided, in agreement with Nepal Students' Union, ANNFSU and UCPN (Maoist) affiliated ANNISU-R, to enforce the semester system only at the Kirtipur-based central campus beginning this academic year.

Chairperson of CPN-Maoist affiliated ANNISU-R Sharad Rasaily said enforcement of the semester system alone could not improve the quality of education, adding that the curriculum should also be reformed and made scientific.

President of Students' Forum Nepal, Ashok Yadav, warned of resorting to strong protests if their demands were not met.

The 11 student unions are scheduled to hand over joint memorandum to the Office of the vice chancellor and at the TU-affiliated colleges across the country today.
