KATHMANDU, MAY 27 -
The eight newly appointed Supreme Court (SC) Justices assumed office on Tuesday.
The new justices
— Baidhyanath Upadhyay, Gopal Parajuli, Dipak Raj Joshi, Govinda
Upadhyay, Om Prakash Mishra, Devendra Gopal Shrestha, Cholendra Shumsher
Rana and Jagadish Sharma were assigned benches by Chief Justice
Damodar Prasad Sharma after administering them oath of office and
secrecy this morning.
The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) had on Monday endorsed all the eight names recommended by the Judicial Council (JC) for the post of permanent Supreme Court justices .
The committee had settled the controversy over the nominees for SC justices
through a clandestine voting after the hearing committee members
remained divided over the appointment of the recommend judges.
A meeting of the JC on April 22 had recommended the eight names for the post of permanent justice in the apex court.
The number of permanent justice in the apex court has now reached 13
with two more vacant posts. There is also a constitutional provision to
appoint temporary justices
based on the caseload in the court.
