KATHMANDU, APR 24 -
The high-altitude support staffs have asked the government to allow the
foreign climbers who have obtained Mt Everest climbing permits for this
season to make it valid for next five years.
The mountain workers put forth the demand during a meeting held at the Everest Base Camp with Tourism Minister Bhim Acharya on Thursday.
During the meeting with around 600 mountain workers and foreign
climbers, Acharya said that he would take the proposal to this effect to
the Cabinet for approval. The demand largely suggests that many
climbers are not in a mood to continue their mission this season.
Amid doubts that mountain workers would quit their mission a 12 member
high level delegation comprising representatives from private sector
landed at the Base Camp this morning to negotiate with the guides and
support staffs in an attempt to persuade them to continue their mission
and to inform them that their earlier demands were addressed.
Sixteen high-altitude guides had perished in an avalanche at the Everest Base Camp on April 18.
