LALITPUR, APR 09 - Bhairahawa and Birgunj opened the Senior One-day National Tournament with comfortable wins on Wednesday.
Bhairahawa hammered Kathmandu by 125 runs here at the Pulchowk Engineering College ground while Birgunj defeated Baitadi by 34 runs at the Rangashala ground in Pokhara.
In Pulchowk, Bhairahawa rode on a composed half century from Prakash KC to post 227 runs in 45.3 overs before dismissing Kathmandu for 102 runs in 35.4 overs. Top four Bhairahawa batsmen got starts but failed to convert them into big scores before No 7 KC scored 82-ball 62 to help put on a competitive total on the board.
Sankar Rana scored 36, Faizlur Rahman Khan hit 27 and Sabin Shakya and Nirmal Thapa chipped in 19 runs each for Bhairahawa before KC took the responsibility of scoring runs. Man-of-the-match KC was the last man out after hitting seven fours and two sixes.
Sonu Tamang was the pick of the Kathmandu bowlers with figures of 3-57. Prashanna Shakya (2-29) and Pramod Basnet (2-20) shared four wickets while Srijan Subedi and Bijay Gautam also claimed one wicket apiece for Kathmandu.
In reply, opener Pramod Basnet top scored with a painstaking 21 off 46 deliveries in a hapless Kathmandu run chase. Suman Uday was the next best contributor with 35-ball 17 while Sanjay Basnet and tailender Arjun Adhikari chipped in 15 runs each as Kathmandu were eventually dismissed in the 36th over.

In Pokhara, Sumit Shrestha and Suraj Prasad Kurmi struck half centuries but Birgunj were bowled out for 233 runs in 45.1 overs after opting to bat first. Baitadi could only manage 199 runs in 48.4 overs in reply.
Birgunj were in a dire strait after losing quick wickets to be 17-3 but a 119-run fourth wicket stand between Kurmi and Sumit rescued their team. Kurmi was cautious consuming 100 deliveries in scoring 57 runs, which included six hits to the fence. Sumit was more fluent as he struck nine boundaries and one six in his 76-ball 69. Shiva Tandukar also contributed 37-ball 30 with four fours and a six. Santosh Bhatt, Basant Khatri and Mahendra Chand took two wickets each for Baitadi.
In reply, Prem Tamang and Dilip Nath top scored with 38 runs each as Baitadi's run chase ended with eight balls to spare in the 50-over match thanks to a discipline bowling from Ram Naresh Giri. Basanta Khatri was the next best run-scorer for Baitadi with run-a-ball 21.
Man-of-the-match Giri finished with figures of 5-34 from 9.4 overs. Arif Sheikh also grabbed two while Gaurav Singh, Kumar Thapa and Hasim Ansari scalped one wicket each for Birgunj.
