The Yadav couple died when a bicycle they were riding on was hit by a
motorcycle heading on the East-West Highway on January 4. While Lila
Devi succumbed to her injuries on her way to the Dharan-based BP Koirala
Institute of Health Sciences, Raj Kumar breathed his last at the Neuro
Hospital in Biratnagar four days later.
The children of the economically deprived family have been left in a
lurch after the death of their parents. “We used to make a living
ploughing three katthas of our land and some belonging to others,” said
Rajkumar’s mother Ramsuner Devi. She said she felt as though her whole
world had collapsed and that she is haunted by the thoughts as to how
she could look after the little ones. “My mother had said that she would
get some ‘Bagiya’ (foodstuff) from the market for the night but she
never returned,” said Durga, eldest of the seven. She said they are now
unable to concentrate on studies as they have think of means to satisfy
their hunger.
The Area Police Office in Rupani said they have seized the motorcycle
and kept the rider, Shankar Basnet of Biratnagar-11, under surveillance.
Local people, meanwhile, have demanded that the government provide some
aid to the children.
