Rare blood moon sighting tonight

KATHMANDU, OCT 08 - Astronomy enthusiasts will get the opportunity to observe “blood moon”—a phenomenon caused by total lunar eclipse , the second for this year—on Wednesday evening.
Although Nepal will witness partial part of the eclipse, it is guaranteed to be a fulsome spectacle if you have a fairly decent starter telescope or a pair of binoculars. For even better view, one could visit Takshila Astronomy Club at Samakhusi.
Jayanta Acharya, senior astronomer at Balmiki Campus, said the best time to observe blood moon is between 5:40 pm and 6:20 pm in Kathmandu. The full moon which will pass directly through the earth’s dark shadow will be visible only after sunset from Nepal. The total part of the eclipse will last for about an hour, while the partial umbral eclipse could go up to an hour and 10 minutes.
The blood moon refers to the orange or red colour the moon takes as a result of sunlight scattering off earth’s atmosphere. This is the second in a series of four blood moon eclipses.
Unlike solar eclipses which are harmful to naked eyes, lunar eclipse may be viewed with binoculars or telescopes.
